For one weekend at the start of August, the shoreline roads that ring Michigan's Thumb turn into a long ribbon of yard sales, barn sales, and small-town antique stops. The Thumbcoast Antique Yard Sale Trail follows the water — up M-29 along the St. Clair River from New Baltimore, through Port Huron where M-25 takes over, then north along the Lake Huron shore around the tip of the Thumb and down the Saginaw Bay side toward Bay City. Drive the whole thing and it is well over a hundred miles of coast, strung across the harbor and farm towns of the Blue Water and Thumb country. The 2026 edition runs Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 9.

Roughly 177 miles of shoreline is far more than most people cover in a day, and that is the point: the Thumbcoast is a route you graze, not a race you finish. The sales spread across ten anchor towns with no central organizer, so the difference between a great haul and a long lakeside drive comes down to picking your stretch and knowing the coast. Here is how to plan it.

The lay of the land

Michigan's Thumb is exactly what it sounds like — the mitten's thumb, jutting into Lake Huron above Detroit. The Thumbcoast trail wraps its eastern edge along the water, and it is easiest to picture in three stretches: the St. Clair River run at the south, the Lake Huron shore up the outside, and the Saginaw Bay side coming back down toward Bay City.

This is old resort-and-farm territory. The lakeside towns filled with summer cottages a century ago, and behind them lie generations of Thumb farmland. That mix is what makes the sales worth the drive: cottage attics and farm barns getting cleared out in the same weekend, along a coast that most of the state drives right past.

The route, south to north

The named anchors, south to north around the Thumb, run New Baltimore → Marine City → St. Clair → Port Huron → Lexington → Port Sanilac → Harbor Beach → Port Austin → Caseville → Bay City, all on or beside M-29 and M-25. Those are the natural points to plan around.

Nobody hands you a seller map for the Thumb — the coast is too long and too local for that. You pick a stretch of shoreline, follow the signs, and let the lake set your pace. The trick is choosing your segment before you leave the driveway.

One-segment strategy — don't try to drive it all

At 177 shoreline miles, the Thumbcoast is a graze-and-choose route. Trying to run the whole coast in a day means more driving than shopping. Pick a segment that matches where you're coming from and work it well:

Because there's no organizer posting numbers, density genuinely varies — some stretches will be nearly continuous, others quiet for a few miles between towns. That's the shoreline; keep driving and the next harbor town fills back in.

Getting there

What you'll find

The Thumb's mix of lake cottages and working farms shapes the inventory. Cottage attics and farm outbuildings get cleared out together, which means honestly-priced, uncurated goods rather than dealer-booth markups.

Lake-cottage and nautical finds are the signature of the Huron shore — old fishing gear, boat and dock hardware, cabin furniture, camp dishes, and the summer-place odds and ends that a century of shoreline cottages leave behind.

Cast iron and hand tools come out of the Thumb farmsteads inland from the water. Griswold and Wagner skillets, old wrenches and planes, and solid farm-cleanout furniture turn up all along the route — the kind of thing a picker plans a weekend around.

Glassware, primitives, and Americana round it out: vintage kitchenware, stoneware, signage, linens, books and records, and the church and community fundraiser tables that are half the fun of a Michigan sale day.

FAQ

When is the Michigan Thumbcoast Antique Yard Sale Trail 2026?

Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 9, 2026 — the first full weekend of August. Most sellers keep roughly 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, though towns along the route set their own hours and the earliest stands open Friday morning.

Where does the Thumbcoast Antique Trail take place?

Along Michigan's Thumb shoreline — up M-29 from New Baltimore along the St. Clair River through Marine City and St. Clair to Port Huron, then north on M-25 up the Lake Huron coast through Lexington, Port Sanilac, Harbor Beach, and Port Austin at the tip, and down the Saginaw Bay side through Caseville toward Bay City. It is roughly 177 miles of coast end to end.

Is there a map or list of the Thumbcoast sellers?

There is no official organizer or central vendor registry. The MapMySales event map pulls together individual listings from Craigslist, Facebook, and community-submitted sales into one searchable map. Sellers can add their own address directly, and it shows up on the map immediately.

What towns are on the route?

From south to north: New Baltimore, Marine City, St. Clair, Port Huron, Lexington, Port Sanilac, Harbor Beach, Port Austin, Caseville, and Bay City — ten anchor towns around the Thumb. Most shoppers pick a stretch rather than driving all of it in one day.

Where should I base for the Thumbcoast Antique Trail?

Port Huron is a natural base at the south end, where M-25 begins and the St. Clair River meets Lake Huron. For the classic Lake Huron stretch, one of the harbor towns — Lexington, Port Sanilac, or Port Austin at the tip — puts you in the middle of the coast.
