For one weekend each August, the shoreline roads around Michigan's Thumb turn into a long ribbon of yard sales, barn sales, and small-town antique stops. The Thumbcoast Antique Yard Sale Trail follows the water — up M-29 along the St. Clair River from New Baltimore, through Port Huron where M-25 begins, then north along the Lake Huron shore around the tip of the Thumb and down the Saginaw Bay side toward Bay City. It is well over a hundred miles of coast if you drive the whole thing, strung across the little harbor and farm towns that ring the Blue Water and Thumb country.
This is old resort-and-farm territory, and the goods reflect it: lake-cottage and cabin finds, nautical and fishing gear, cast iron and hand tools out of Thumb farmsteads, vintage glassware and kitchenware, primitives, and the everyday Michigan Americana that comes out of a shoreline garage cleanout. Port Sanilac, Lexington, and Port Austin anchor the classic Lake Huron stretch, while the St. Clair River towns of Marine City and St. Clair bookend the south end.
There is no single central organizer handing out a seller map — the sales are run by the towns, harbor communities, and individual property owners along the route, so density varies from town to town and year to year. Most sellers keep roughly 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Pick a stretch of coast, or run the whole shoreline; most shoppers base around Port Huron or one of the Thumb harbor towns and work a segment at a time.
