Scavenger's Journey is South Dakota's largest annual rummage sale event — three days across the Missouri River country of central South Dakota. The organizer has condensed the route into a more compact journey: it runs along Interstate 90 from Reliance in the west east to Plankinton, then drops south on a loop through Lake Andes and back up to Platte. Twelve communities take part: Reliance, Oacoma, Chamberlain, Pukwana, Kimball, White Lake, Plankinton, Stickney, Geddes, Lake Andes, Armour, and Platte.
The tighter loop is the whole point of the change — less time on the road between towns, more time at the tables. The event draws from an enormous rural catchment, with families coming in from ranches, farms, and small towns across the western Plains to set up and to shop. The goods reflect that: vintage western and ranch equipment, genuine farm tools, mid-century furniture, and the kind of flat-priced estate merchandise that hasn't passed through a dealer yet.
Chamberlain, on the Missouri River where I-90 crosses, is the largest town on the route and the natural place to base. With the route condensed, many shoppers now cover the I-90 line and the south loop over the three days without the long hauls the older, wider route demanded.
This route runs through these anchor towns. Drive any segment, or the whole route — most folks pick a stretch and work their way through it.

Central South Dakota, along Interstate 90 and a south loop on US-281 and SD-45. The route was condensed into a more compact journey of 12 communities: Reliance, Oacoma, Chamberlain, Pukwana, Kimball, White Lake, Plankinton, Stickney, Geddes, Lake Andes, Armour, and Platte.
The current route is condensed — it runs the I-90 corridor from Reliance east to Plankinton, then a south loop through Lake Andes up to Platte. The compact loop is designed to cut driving time between towns so you spend more of the weekend shopping. Chamberlain, on the Missouri River, is the largest town and the natural base.
Sellers and businesses register through scavengersjourney.com before the event. The registration page has separate forms for rummage sales and businesses.
