Scavenger's Journey is South Dakota's largest annual rummage sale event — three days spread across 14 communities in the Missouri River country of central South Dakota. The route follows Interstate 90 from Kadoka in the west through Murdo, Presho, Chamberlain, and Kimball, then loops south on Highway 281 and Highway 45 through Platte and Geddes before curling back north to White Lake and Plankinton.
The scale of the event surprises first-timers. The South Dakota version of the highway sale culture draws from an enormous rural catchment — families driving in from ranches, farms, and small towns across the western Plains. The goods reflect that: vintage western and ranch equipment, genuine farm tools, mid-century furniture, and the kind of flat-priced estate merchandise that hasn't passed through a dealer yet.
Chamberlain is the midpoint and the largest town on the route. Most through-shoppers spend the night there and split the route across two days — west end Friday, east loop Saturday, and use Sunday for anything they missed.
The 127 corridor runs through these anchor cities. Drive any segment, or the whole route — most folks pick a state and work their way through it.

Approximately 150 miles by road, combining the I-90 corridor with the south loop on US-281 and SD-45. Most shoppers split it across two days — the I-90 stretch one day and the south loop the next.

Scavenger's Journey runs every year on the last full weekend of June — Friday through Sunday. The 2027 edition will fall on June 25–27, 2027.
